- Jeffrey Kahn, Five Tool
The Five Tool 2023 All-Summer Team is a collection of the top dudes who performed well in Five Tool events this summer. These dudes have been recognized as the best of the best from Five Tool events this summer. The selection process began by looking over the Dudes of the Day/Players of the Game section. Then, a review of the statistics from the top Five Tool events (Max Muncy World Series, Alex Bregman World Series, Pudge Rodriguez World Classic, AABC Don Mattingly World Series, AABC Mickey Mantle World Series, Five Tool World Series, Five Tool West World Series) was taken into account. Each member of this team put together some type of dominant performance, or more, this summer to stand out and grab the attention of the Five Tool staff.
All-Summer First Team players will receive a special "1st Team" badge on their player profile while All-Summer Honorable Mention players will receive a standard All-Summer badge on their profile.
*Please note: all statistics are from Five Tool events only.
Rockwall-Heath (TX) 2024, Oklahoma State commit, RHP/1B
Right-handed pitcher/first baseman Caleb Hoover made the Five Tool Pocket Radar Hot List seven times throughout the course of the 2023 summer averaging top speed of 90 MPH on his fastball. The Oklahoma State now signee has a deep arsenal with a curveball at 68-70 MPH, slider at 75-77 MPH and changeup at 80-82 MPH. There were multiple no-hit appearances while also allowing just one run in 15.2 innings pitched. His best performance was at the AABC Don Mattingly World Series going 6.1 strong innings with nine strikeouts. In the same event, Hoover hit .474 and tied a quarterfinal game with a blasted grand slam in late innings and his Dallas Tigers Bergman squad would go on to win the game. While it was not a "Five Tool event" by rules, Hoover ended the summer being named the MVP of the AABC Connie Mack World Series.
Stat line: 15.2 IP, 24K, 7H, ER (0.57 ERA), 4 BB / .313 (21-67), 6 2B, HR, 22 RBI, 15R, 19 BB, 4 SB
Gahr (CA) 2024, LBSU commit, C
It was quite the coming out party for So Cal Guardians 17U/18U catcher/IF Jose Perez. It was in the Five Tool California SoCal Independence Day Bash where the Gahr (CA) product hit three home runs in three days and quickly earned an offer to Long Beach State before committing shortly after on July 9. Perez showed the ability to go to all parts of the park finding barrels to right, center and left with a comfortable approach at the plate.
Stat line: .537 (22-41), 2B, 3B, 4 HR, 12 RBI, 13R, 4 BB, 11 SB
Richland (TX) 2023, Odessa College, 1B
Manny Salas ranked near the top in runs batted in and home runs this summer in Five Tool events. The Odessa College signee showed easy power from the left side sending balls all over the park with high exit velocity. Out of Richland (TX), getting hits was an every day occurance for North Texas Longhorns middle-of-the-lineup with 17 in 36 AB. Salas also found success in key situations with 11 two-out RBI, which was second most in Five Tool events.
Stat line: .472 (17-36), 4 2B, 3 HR, 21 RBI, 10R, 5 BB, 2 SB
St. John's School (TX) 2024, Texas commit, SS
Carson Luna was named MVP of the 2023 AABC Don Mattingly World Series after his stellar week in Melissa, TX. The 2024 now Texas signee hit .522 (12-23) with a .607 OBP and 1.694 OPS. Luna led 2024 Texas Twelve Red Sox to winning the Mattingly getting the first run of the game and putting an exclamation mark on his week with a home run to left (see below). Here's what our Dustin McComas had to say after the event: "I don’t think I’ve seen a 2024 player who has improved as much from one year to the next as Luna has. The Texas commitment improved his swing, which is now easily direct to the baseball with a good path and is in the conversation as the best right-handed swing in the state. And it played. Loudly...
Noticeably stronger and more physical through the upper half with broad shoulders, Luna has gone from an interesting prospect to an unquestioned dude. Defensively, his arm action and strength have improved dramatically and while his accuracy is still a work in progress, his blend of athleticism and arm strength means he can profile in the infield and the outfield with an impact bat."
Stat line: .522 (12-23), 5 2B, 3B, 2 HR, 13 RBI, 9R, 5 BB
Boswell (TX) 2024, Texas A&M University commit, SS
Shortstop Sawyer Farr picks up his second consecutive All-Summer First Team award. The Texas A&M commit out of Boswell followed up an absurd 2022 summer by hitting three times as many doubles, two-and-a-half as many triples and one more home run. The Dallas Tigers Bergman star also walked 24 times compared to 12 in the year prior. Farr may be the most impressively consistent player in Five Tool doing it from both sides of the dish while making all sorts of athletic plays in the field. Another impressive note from Farr is that he only struck out nine times in 112 plate appearances in Five Tool events.
Stat line: ..405 (34-84), 12 2B, 2 3B, 2 HR, 15 RBI, 36R, 24 BB, 18 SB
Mid-Pacific (HI) 2024, Kansas State commit, 3B/1B
It is believed that Hawaii Elite 2G Toro's Chandler Murray hit the furthest ball with a wood bat from any right-handed hitter in Five Tool summer events. The corner infielder launched one well over the Milwaukee Brewers Spring Training Complex's tall left field wall in the Five Tool Arizona AZ Fall Classic Senior Qualifier. It was picked up over 500 feet away. The now Kansas State commit hit baseballs with some of the hardest exit velocities, turning around heads at every park he played in. A two-week stint in Texas, where his squad won the Five Tool Show 17U Championships and had a strong showing in the AABC Don Mattingly World Series, saw Murray thriving with multiple extra-base hits proving to be a scary sight for opposing pitchers.
Stat line: .387 (12-31), 3 2B, 2 3B, HR, 8 RBI, 13R, 7 BB, 2 SB
THESA (TX) 2026, Uncommitted, OF
Left-handed hitting Julian Billingsley of NTXBC Dirtbags 2026 Allerheiligen seemed to be the most comfortable of players at the dish this summer. The outfielder/utility picked up six Player of the Game awards, one Hitter of the Game award, one Pitcher of the Game award, and was a Dude of the Weekend for his performance in the Five Tool Texas DFW Regional. The youngest player of the first teamers, Billingsley had strong performances in multiple National events, including the Alex Bregman World Series, Alex Bregman South World Series, and Five Tool Club Championships.
Stat line: ..453 (24-53), 7 2B, 2 3B, 21 RBI, 17R, 12 BB, 2 SB
Slidell (LA) 2024, University of Oklahoma commit, OF/RHP
It was the single greatest performance in a Five Tool National event as NOLA Scout 25 Micheu's Corey Cousin did the following in the AABC Mickey Mantle World Series: hit .696 (16-23) with four doubles, two triples, four home runs, 14 RBI, 16 runs scored, two walks, nine stolen bases with no strikeouts in 30 plate appearances. Truly incredible. Playing in Norman and at the University of Oklahoma, the outfielder/RHP out of Slidell (LA) picked up an offer from the Sooners where he would commit very shortly after. Cousin was of course named MVP of the event after picking up five Player of the Game awards in the eight that he played in.
Stat line: .696 (16-23), 4 2B, 2 3B, 4 HR, 14 RBI, 16R, 2 BB, 9 SB
Sultana (CA) 2025, California Baptist commit, OF
California Rays' Eric Ruiz ended tied for the lead with four home runs in Five Tool events this summer. The outfielder/RHP out of Sultana (CA) picked up an offer from California Baptist where he would commit to in September. Ruiz hit balls hard to the pull side all summer long and treated opposing third baseman to the true definition of, "the hot corner." The home runs the '24 hit were no joke considering some of the parks he hit them at with deep fences to left (see the one below from East LA College). Ruiz also struck out 28 batters in 13.2 innings pitched on the bump.
Stat line: .457 (16-35), 5 2B, 3B, 4 HR, 15 RBI, 12R, 6 BB, 2 SB
The Five Tool 2023 All-Summer Team Honorable Mention is a group of the next set of talented dudes who have performed at a high level in Five Tool events this summer. The collection of players listed below are primarily derived from the summer 'Dudes of the Day' list; however many others not given that award have excelled with impressive performances in Five Tool events this summer. This talented list of players, while just missing the cut as being selected to the All-Summer Team, should be recognized for their outstanding play in Five Tool. Let's take a look at the Five Tool 2023 All-Summer Team and Honorable Mentions:
