Five Tool Top 10 of the Week (3/21-3/27)
03/27/2023

Baseball season is here, and that means the Five Tool staff is out there working, evaluating and filming. If you know anything about Five Tool, you know we capture a lot of baseball video. A LOT. And that means we see a lot of amazing plays and excellent performances.

Each week, we’re going to share with readers, fans and baseball junkies 10 of the best plays and performances we recorded and covered from across the nation during the previous week. Now that we’re off and running in Texas, California, Arizona and beyond, we’ll undoubtedly be forced to leave some recognition on the bench to keep this to 10.

This week’s list includes hitting highlights from a JUCO game that ended with a football score and the new favorite for defensive play of the year. Let’s take a look:

10.  Deer Creek (Oklahoma) 2024 prospect Ashton Hartwig caught our attention during the Five Tool Festival and he grabbed it again last week by smacking a deep solo homer off one of the nation’s top 2024 pitchers, right-hander Owen Hall.

9. A true impact player on both sides of the ball, Arkansas 2024 commitment Zane Becker showed his impressive catch-and-throw skill by picking off a runner at first base. The Flower Mound standout catches one of the state’s top pitching staffs, too.

8. Cameron Davidson, a 2025 prospect who plays for the HSAA Angels, showed impressive hops when he elevated to snag a line drive. And he then completed the impressive double play.

7. He’s known for his ability to create top exit velocity and hit for power and that’s certainly what Texas commitment Klayton Bolkema showed this past weekend. In this clip, the 2024 prospect pounded an opposite-field, majestic three-run homer.

6. Pitchers are athletes, too. Cisco College’s Kyrin LeBlanc showed his impressive athleticism when he hustled off the mound to grab the ball after a but was misplayed. Then, he beat the runner to third base with an athletic dive to get the out. Heads-up defense.

5. In relief, Weatherford College signee Jack Cagianello pitched the final 3.0 innings to complete a combined no-hitter for Guyer. The right-hander was up to 90 MPH and calmly completed with the game and no-hitter on the line.

4. Chris Johnson put his body on the line for his team this past week when he robbed a hitter of an extra-base hit in left field. Thanks to perfectly judging and timing the fly ball, the senior was able to complete the catch as he made contact with the unforgiving wall in left field. Tough.

3. Cisco and Grayson played one of the most outrageously entertaining games of the year and provided multiple highlights on this list. In a game that required a calculator to keep up with all the offense, Tysaac Noland tied the game at 22-22 in the ninth inning with a three-run homer. Yes, you read that right. And there’s more…

2. Josh Overbeek gave Cisco the ninth-inning lead in dramatic fashion when he followed Noland’s homer with a two-run shot of his own. The 25-23 lead turned into a victory when a scoreless half inning actually occurred in the bottom of the ninth.

1. With the bases loaded, two outs and his team clinging to a 7-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh, Hamilton (Arizona) outfielder Jaylen Payne made what might be the best defensive play we’ve seen so far this season. What looked like an extra-base hit, potentially game-tying double off the bat turned into a Superman-style, full-extension diving catch in the left-center gap. Payne tracked the ball perfectly, didn’t cut down his strides, and then timed his dive as well as he possibly could. It takes outstanding athleticism to make that play.
