- Jeffrey Kahn, Five Tool
The Five Tool 2022 All-Summer Team is a collection of the top dudes who performed well in Five Tool events this summer. These dudes have been recognized as the best of the best from Five Tool events this summer. The selection process began by looking over the 'Dudes of the Weekend' and the 'Dudes of the Day' section. Then, a review of the statistics from the top Five Tool events (Max Muncy World Series, Alex Bregman World Series, Pudge Rodriguez World Classic, AABC Don Mattingly World Series, Five Tool World Series, Five Tool West World Series) was taken into account. Each member of this team put together some type of dominant performance, or more, this summer to stand out and grab the attention of the Five Tool staff. *Please note: all statistics are from Five Tool events only.
Plano East (TX) 2024, Baylor commit, RHP/OF
It seemed like every time out on the bump, Dallas Tigers Bergman's Brayden Bergman just got better and better. From closing out a win and touching 89 MPH his first outing of the summer May 27th (3.1 IP with three strikeouts) to touching 92 MPH one month later as he diced up 7 in 4.0 no-hit innings of work, the '24 Plano East (TX) product would eventually reach a best fastball bolt of 93 MPH (multiple times) in early July. He would then go on to earn an offer from and commit to Baylor University. In 19 innings of work, the RHP did not allow a single earned run with just two walks. And when he was not pitching, Bergman hit .386 driving in 24 runs in his "spare time." Not bad as he showed ability to be a two-way dude. Stat line: 19 IP, 29K, 7H, 0 ER (0.00 ERA), 2 BB / .386 (22-57), 2B, 5 3B, 2 HR, 24 RBI, 11R, 6 BB, 2 SB
Kamehameha Schools Kapalama (HI) 2024, Vanderbilt commit, C
It only took two tournaments for Aukai Kea to make it seem like he played all summer in Five Tool. While short on the calendar, this torrid run from July 30 to August 6 felt long. Kea went 3-for-3 with two doubles and four runs batted in at his first game in the Five Tool California SoCal Summer Finale and would carry things over into the Five Tool West World Series. Out of Hawaii with Hawaii Baseball Group, Kea posted a stout 0.875 slugging percentage with a 1.359 OPS while picking up four "Player of the Game" honors along the way. A few months later, the RHH would go on to commit to Vanderbilt University. Stat line: .542 (13-24), 8 2B, 15 RBI, 8R, 2 BB, SB
Marcus (TX) 2025, Uncommitted, 1B
The youngest grad year of the first teamers comes by way of a 6-foot-4, 250-pound 1B/RHP who led all of Five Tool with seven home runs. Near the tops in hits and runs batted in as well, the slugger from Marcus (TX) seemingly was unstoppable at the dish. The Texas Cannons star, under Coach Chamblee, also showed his dominance and the hill and made hitters pay by way of strikeout with 47 over 31.1 innings. While still developing and putting on muscle, LeBeoef presents a potentially large upside if he can continue to see the ball as well as he did all summer moving forward. Stat line: .450 (36-80), 8 2B, 7 HR, 33 RBI, 21R, 9 BB, SB / 31.33 IP, 47K, 28H, 7 ER (2.01 ERA), 7 BB
Union (OK) 2023, Oklahoma State commit, SS
"Pure" seems to be the best way to describe the swing of Oklahoma State recruit Avery Ortiz. Really busting back onto our summer scene in the middle of July, the '23 BBA Titans shortstop out of Union (OK) in Tulsa, OK, hit a single, double, triple and home run over two games at future rival OU's L. Dale Mitchell Ballpark. Ortiz would travel to North Texas for the Five Tool World Series where the RHH wouldn't stop catching barrels and showing off gap-to-gap power, including extra-base hits to left and right field (HR to right). An incredibly tough out at the dish who seems to get large plate coverage with an explosive approach, Ortiz is always a threat to make the opposition pay at any moment. Stat line: .519 (14-27), 4 2B, 3B, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 14R, 6 BB, 7 SB
Boswell (TX) 2024, Texas A&M University commit, SS
Shortstop Sawyer Farr started the summer off strong in the Five Tool Texas DFW Kickoff picking up a "Dude of the Weekend" nominee. The 2024 Texas A&M commit out Boswell (TX) was an on base machine as he racked up seven hits. Farr made a statement that Memorial Day morning belting a three-run home run well over the wall in left from the right side. It wouldn't stop there for the Dallas Tigers Bergman switch-hitter as he shined bright at the 2022 Pudge World Classic with an elite .444/.583/.889 slash line at the top-heavy event. When you talk about the five tools of baseball, Farr is a great example of a player you start with in the '24 class. Stat line: .438 (28-64), 4 2B, 5 3B, HR, 12 RBI, 29R, 12 BB, 12 SB
Community (TX) 2023, Northeast Texas Community College commit, 3B/RHP
As our own Dustin McComas put it best during the 2022 AABC Don Mattingly World Series, "If you swing a neon green wood bat, you better be able to hit... and the switch-hitter definitely hit... There isn’t anything Terry can’t do on the diamond." The Community (TX) product who would go on to commit to Northeast Texas Community College and showed off the bat-to-ball skills and defensive ability in the Mattingly. He made highlight plays at third base (see below) while playing with calm, confident actions; he smacked line drives and proved to be a tough out in the batter’s box with zero strikeouts; and he fired strikes on the mound with a fastball up to 87 MPH that had a hint of deception because of his short arm path. With a .486 batting average in the summer, it wasn't just the Mattingly in which the Dallas Tigers Ahearne 17U slugger proved to be a dude. Stat line: .486 (35-72), 5 2B, 5 3B, 2 HR, 22 RBI, 19R, 8 BB, 5 SB / 29.33 IP, 23K, 34H, 13 ER (3.99 ERA) 16 BB
Hebron (TX) 2023, Dallas Baptist University commit, OF
While at first glance a .383 batting average may not jump off the page compared to the other first teamers' BA's, switch-hitting '23 OF Aden Howard made an impact in pretty much every game he played in. And who are we kidding? Because 31 hits in 81 at-bats will get you PAID at the next level. Howard showed continuous improvement from the start to the end of the summer and jumped up the Five Tool Texas 55 board (now at No. 6). Howard has a natural feel for the game and made all sorts of acrobatic catches getting great jumps in center field. Playing against some of the best competition a year up, Howard dished out stellar offensive performances when his Dallas Tigers Hernandez team needed him the most to win the AABC Connie Mack World Series Qualifier. Again from McComas at the Mattingly: "DBU commitment Aden Howard was as talented as advertised. I timed him in the 4.2-4.3-second range down the line from both the left and right side of the plate, and he hit .455/.478/.500 for Dallas Tigers – Hernandez 2023. Immense upside and there’s a big gap between where he is currently – physically and skill-wise – and where he could be at this time next year. Regardless, he’s definitely one of the top prospects in the state." Stat line: .383 (31-81), 8 2B, 3B, 10 RBI, 28R, 14 BB, 14 SB
Elkins (TX) 2024, University of Houston commit, OF
Texas Twelve 2024 Maroon outfielder Braylon Payne was all over Twitter this summer picking up 21 hits and flying around the bases to the tune of four triples. The '24 Elkins product's quick start to the summer at the 2022 Pudge World Classic helped him immediately pick up a scholarship offer from the University of Houston he'd jump on. The LHH seems to always be in attack at the dish showing good bat speed and a thirst to pull the baseball. However, his lone home run was smoked to left center (see below), proving he's not just going to take every pitch to right. Payne looks to be enjoying the game as it comes easy to him hitting .488 in the Five Tool '22 summer. Stat line: .488 (21-43), 3 2B, 4 3B, HR, 10 RBI, 22R, 10 BB, 12 SB
Pearland (TX) 2023, Sam Houston State University commit, OF
A Five Tool favorite because he showed up and created excitement seemingly each time he took the field, Pearland 2023 outfielder Brett Smajstrla has an intriguing hitting profile featuring some speed to go with some raw power. There is a little swing and miss present in the bat from the right side, but there’s also some noticeable gap-to-gap impact that will grow into more homers. The Houston Athletics star carried his strong start to the summer into the Mattingly against top competition where he put himself on the radar in front of the college coaches. At the event in Melissa, TX, Smajstrla went 6-for-12 (.500) with one double, two home runs, four runs batted in and seven runs scored. Turning his intriguing tools into eye-opening production would earn him a scholarship to Sam Houston State University. Stat line: .405 (30-74), 6 2B, 5 3B, 2 HR, 22 RBI, 33R, 9 BB, 9 SB
