Grant and Will’s SoCal Scout Notes (July 21-24)

Over the course of the 2022 Five Tool California Summer Season, staff members Grant Carver and Will Bonn will be at select games to provide extra scouting coverage for select games. Scout notes have no bias and players of note in no particular order from the Five Tool California SoCal events will be highlighted.

There will be a wide variety of players in these notes from uncommitted players to Division 1 commits to Division 3 commits and to junior college commits. Some games may have a few players noted while others may have a plethora, all dependent upon performances during the games and events.

Listed below is the Five Tool Scouting Staff Notes from the Five Tool California San Diego Show.

1) Seth Baldwin, Aces Baseball Club 2022:

Aces Baseball Club 2022’s Seth Baldwin had a solid outing on the bump during the Five Tool San Diego Show. The right handed pitcher went the distance for a seven inning complete game with seven strikeouts and no earned runs. This 2022 Centralia College signee out of Monroe (WA) pounded the zone and made high quality pitches when he needed them the most. During his outing, he stayed primarily away from most batters and was able to dominate the part of the plate while inducing weak ground balls and off balance swings. Baldwin showed a sharp slider that he would throw to keep batters guessing while at the plate in just about every count. The right hander has a deceptive delivery, going to the plate slowly and then speeding up when delivering the pitch. Baldwin looked solid in his outing and will look to make a difference next season on the mound for Centralia College.

2) Chase Christenson, Three Gear Goon Squad:

Three Gear Goon Squad’s Chase Christenson had a solid weekend at the dish in San Diego and collected multiple extra base hits. In the game I watched him, he collected two doubles, one run batted in, and scored two runs. The 2023 uncommitted right hander out of Rio Americano (CA) showed good pull side power, burning the left fielder multiple times over the weekend. Christenson has a smooth stroke at the plate and showed off his quick hands each at bat. He has a relaxed and upright approach at the plate, utilizing a hover as he loads to keep his eyes through the zone. This stud keeps his hands tight to his body and is able to be explosive through the zone with the barrel. Defensively at short he is a smooth and sound defender with a strong arm, showing off good lateral motion and soft hands. Christenson was looking to do damage all weekend and he was successful at it.

3) Brady Zablah, Three Gear Dirtbags:

Three Gear Dirtbags’s Brady Zablah was dialed in during his outing at the Five Tool San Diego Show. Zablah went three and one third innings while striking out five batters and only allowing one hit in the process. The right handed pitcher continued to keep batters guessing at the plate during his outing with a fastball and curveball mix. He was able to dominate the zone with his fastball and would use his curveball in leverage counts trying to get an out. The fastball has natural movement, almost as if it were a cutter, cutting away from right handed hitters and into left handed hitters. The curveball looked to be his out pitch, as it is a loopy 12-6 curveball that got many swings and misses during his outing. The Rio Americano (CA) product had a solid outing and looks to build upon this outing the rest of the summer going into next season.

4) Alonzon Castruita, West Coast A’s:

West Coast A’s Alonzo Castruita went the distance during his outing in this event. The right hander allowed one run through seven innings while racking up six strikeouts and giving up five hits. With a fastball, curveball, and slider mix the Eastlake (CA) product was able to keep the opposition at bay, limiting their scoring chances during his outing.  The 2024 stud went right after batters with his fastball and pounded the zone the entire outing. He was able to command the fastball going both inside and outside to the hitter, hitting his spots and mixing up locations well. He showed a 12-6 curveball that looked to be his out pitch. The 12-6 has a sharp downward break that looks deceptive coming out of his hand. The slider he showed was a good secondary pitch to go along with the curve as the primary out pitch. This uncommitted pitcher has smooth repeatable mechanics, creates good drive off his back leg, and is a dude to keep an eye on.

5) Jacob Imoto, No Fear SkullCandy Crushers:

No Fear SkullCandy Crushers’ Jacob Imoto did it all during the Five Tool San Diego Show tournament. During the game I watched, the left handed pitcher worked six innings, racked up ten strikeouts, and allowed two earned runs on seven hits. The 2024 uncommitted stud was not afraid to go after hitters as he would pound the zone with his fastball and work in his curveball attempting to get batters to swing and miss when ahead in the count. His curveball had movement like a 12-6 and had a stark difference in velocity from the fastball. The Mission Hills (CA) product fastball sat 78-81 MPH and the 12-6 curveball sat between 68-70 MPH. Imoto also made an impact on the hitting side of things this weekend. There was one game where he went three for three collecting a double, a run batted in, and run scored. In the semi qualifier game he had a walk off two run double to lead his team to the championship game. He showed solid gap to gap power, driving multiple balls into the gaps on the line that lead to doubles. Imoto utilized a leg lift and pause he gives his eyes time to work and see the pitch longer through the zone, then throws his hands to where the pitch is. Imoto did it from both sides of the baseball and you don’t see that all that often.

6) Richard Tejeda, Alpha Baseball SoCal:

Alpha Baseball SoCal’s Richard Tejeda was locked in at the dish during the Five Tool San Diego Show tournament. The right handed hitter was raking over the weekend and racked up a three hit game, bringing home two runs to pad his stats. The day before he showed off his pop by doubling to deep center. The 2023 uncommitted dude from Orange Lutheran (CA) product is a solid hitter and can do it for pop and for average. During his three hit game roped a ball to right, smoked a ball to left, and then again went the other way. He showed off his ability to hit the ball to all parts of the field. Tejeda has a smooth approach at the plate and is able to go with the pitch whether that be inside or outside. He utilizes a small leg lift as his load, as he loads back his hands up by his shoulder. From there he throws his hands at the ball, keeping his hands tight to his body and the barrel goes through the zone.  Tejeda was locked in over the tournament weekend and is a player to keep an eye out for at the plate.

7) Miles Fendrick, Stacked Baseball:

Stacked Baseball’s Miles Fendrick was dialed in at the plate during the this weekends tournament. He racked up six hits on the weekend and tallied up five runs batted in. The right handed hitter ended the weekend with four singles, a double, and a home run. The 2023 uncommitted righty from Cypress (CA) has a unique upright stance that is very compact and is able to generate a lot of power being so compact in his load. Fendrick shows a small leg kick where he loads into his back leg and throws his hands through the zone. He keeps his hands tight to his body allowing for him to drive baseballs gap to gap with pop. The home run he crushed he was able to turn on an inside fastball that was up in the zone, letting his hands work towards the pitch and getting the barrel on top of the zone. The athletic outfielder has a middle to opposite field approach at the plate, and it shows with him collecting multiple hits over the weekend to all sides of the field. Fendrick is a solid bat to have in a line up and a solid overall ballplayer.

8) Treston Kochhar, Three Gear Goon Squad:

Three Gear Goon Squad’s Treston Kochhar racked up a ten strikeout game during his outing at the Five Tool San Diego Show tournament. The right handed pitcher was solid on the mound going six and one third innings, striking out ten batters, only allowing four hits and one earned run. He flashed a fastball, 12-6 curveball, and change up mix that was working on the hill. Kochhar’s fastball ranged from 83-86 MPH and the curveball around 69-72 MPH the 2023 uncommitted stud from Westpark High School (CA) was able to use the change in velocities to keep batters guessing and off balance at the plate. The curve had a good late downward break that led to many swings and misses. He looks calm through the duration of the windup and delivery, repeating his mechanics well. Kochhar is a crafty and deceptive arm, which are always good features to have.

9) Max Sagan, No Fear Skullcandy Crushers:

No Fear Skullcandy Crushers’ Max Sagan has an interesting swing that was getting the job done in San Diego in this event. The 2023 uncommitted right hander from San Marcos (CA) starts with an open stance before bringing his front leg back in and loud hands at first. Sagan did a great job at waiting for his pitch and then turning on it with authority. He was living in the left center gap this weekend and getting extra bases often. The righty also knew how to deliver in the clutch while knocking a walk-off RBI single in the championship game. Sagan controls the bat well and is comfortable at the plate, which was producing results this weekend.

10) Lucas Ehlert, Golden State Baseball:

Everybody loves a good left hander with a big breaking ball and that is exactly what Lucas Ehlert of Golden State Baseball was this weekend. The left hander went five shutout innings and collected five strikeouts in the process. His fastball was located all over the zone and he used it up in the zone to set up the breaker. His curveball was slow and featured heavy drop. Ehlert was pounding the zone with it early in counts and also using it as his out pitch when he needed whiffs. The 2024 uncommitted dude out of Paloma Valley (CA) has a tall and lanky body that should be perfect for him to grow into as he gets older and adds more velocity. This prototype of pitcher is always a fun one and Ehlert should have every chance to continue to improve as he continues on.

11) Shandley Triplett, Old Skool Baseball:

Shandley Triplett of Old Skool Baseball had a swing that caught my eye this weekend in San Diego. He has a unique swing from the left side and it allowed him to hit the ball all over the field. The 2024 uncommitted prospect out of Del Oro (CA) keeps his body and hands low in his load up before flicking his wrist to the ball. His swing is compact and his follow through is short, but he gets to the ball well and flashed impressive bat to ball skills. Being able to go the other way into gaps with authority was also impressive. Shandley goes old fashioned with no batting gloves and has a bit of an old fashioned swing mostly focused on contact. Both of those moves were producing success this weekend.

12) Zane Nordquist, SoCal Redbirds Team Adidas 15U:

Another southpaw that impressed this weekend was Zane Nordquist of SoCal Redbirds Team Adidas 15U. The left hander went five innings on the mound and got ten strikeouts. This 2025 uncommitted lefty from El Camino (CA) had quiet mechanics and a short stride that was a bit unique. Nordquist was mixing up his pitches often and had a couple different breaking balls that he played of his fastball well. One of which was a slider that he looked extra comfortable with and got whiffs on. The left hander also impressed at the plate, keeping his mechanics simple and being able to pull the ball well. Nordquist has impressive potential, especially on the mound, and is a guy worth paying attention to.

13) Vance Haskins, CBA Stockton-Tracy:

One of the most impressive arms of the weekend’s event in San Diego Was CBA Stockton-Tracy’s Vance Haskins. The right hander went the distance for a complete game and collected eleven strikeouts while doing it. He flashed a fastball that touched as high as 85 MPH and sat in the 80-85 MPH range along with a curveball that sat in the 64-65 MPH range. The fastball has nice two seam run on it and the curveball has impressive sharp break on it. The 2024 uncommitted dude out of Clements (CA) was locating his fastball, which was his most impressive pitch, on the corners and up in the zone well. This dude has a legit arm that should play well as he continues on.

14) Will Bowen, Hit Club 18U Navy:

Hit Club 18U Navy’s Will Bowen had a powerful swing from the left side that stood out to me this weekend. The 2022 Lansing Stars commit from Serra (CA) starts open before bring his body back in and unleashing a powerful swing on the ball. He flashed impressive bat speed and yet avoided the violent swing kind of swing that can throw a hitters mechanics out of whack. His natural pull side pop was shown, especially on one double that he crushed to right center field. Bowen is a middle of the order bat that can impact a lineup in a great way with the thump that he flashed this weekend.

15) Treico Holland, SSM Athletics All Pro:

Another arm that was a force on the hill was Treico Holland of SSM Athletics All Pro. The right hander went six innings and racked up eight strikeouts while only allowing one earned run. He is smooth on the mound and plays off the flow that he creates. His fastball was impressive, but his curveball really caught the eye. It jumps out of his hands with sharp break and the hitters reaction’s to it say the whole story. The 2023 uncommitted right hander from El Cerrito (CA) seemed to get better as he continued and the confidence grew as the outing went on. He is an impressive arm and a fun one to watch at that.
